Important Reminders About The Biology Dissertation Format

Biology is a subject that deals with existence of life in various forms. Gene expression, bacterial interactions in the environment, factors affecting life, cell immigration is some of the popular dissertation topics. If you are a student pursuing research work, following reminders will be of great assistance-

  1. First of all go through the instructional guidelines of the project carefully. It includes paying attention to the number of words, formatting style etc.
  2. Choose a title: Accept this challenging work and pick an interesting topic.
  3. Literature review: It is essential that you start writing on a topic after understanding the significance and the methodological approaches.
  4. Risk assessment: Based on the nature of the work and analyzing the risk associated with the lab work, you should fill the risk assessment form.
  5. Lab work: Carry 200 hours of lab work during summers and prepare a track of it by stating it in the lab book. Keep a record of materials and methodologies employed names of bacteria and cell lines, names of the strains, their origin, forms, diagrams, photographs, tables, graphs etc.
  6. Write down the statistical analysis on A4 paper keeping font size, typeface, spaces and appropriate margins in mind. Always place 1.5 inches of margin on the left side and at least 1 inch margin from the other sides. Usually, Times New Roman or Helvetica style typeface is used in 12 points. Number all the pages consecutively at the bottom of the page.
  7. Include following sections in your Biology dissertation –
    • Summary or the abstract page describes aims, findings and achievements of the prepared report.
    • Content page: It includes sections and subsections and should be prepared at the end.
    • Introduction: This section is prepared after aims and objectives have already been decided. It contains literature review. If you are addressing all the published works, cite them to avoid plagiarism issue.
    • Materials and methods: Usually, students prefer writing it is one of the easiest section.
    • Results: This section comes after the methods have been performed and you need to analyze the data. Draw an analysis and include diagrams, graphs, tables and figures. This statistical information should be original and should be prepared from the raw data. Include it in appendices section.
    • Discussion: Draw conclusion after writing your results.
    • References: Write complete references. It should include titles of paper, name of the authors, etc.
    • Acknowledgement: It is optional; however thanking others is a nice gesture.
    • Appendices: This section is optional too.
    • Submit: Ask your supervisor to have a look before submission.
